Professor of Obstetrics Caroline de Costa says abortion reform is ‘absolutely’ necessary because access to the service remains ‘very difficult, expensive and often involves interstate travel’. Labor announced on Wednesday that public hospitals would be compelled to provide abortions free of charge to women if the party was successful at the upcoming May federal election. Professor de Costa says doctors should have the right to refuse to perform the service on religious or other grounds, as long as they make an adequate and timely referral.
