Ribbons Tied to Trees in Hometown Tribute to Gabby Petito

Trees in Gabby Petito’s Long Island hometown have been decorated with ribbons in honor of the 22-year-old, whose body was found in Wyoming days after she was reported missing when her fiance, Brian Laundrie, returned alone from their road trip. According to CBS New York, the tribute was organized by the Johnny Mac Foundation, established in memory of a local 9/11 first responder whose widow is a friend of the Petito family. The ribbons were colored teal to match Petito’s eyes, organizers were cited as saying. This footage, posted to Facebook by Christopher James on September 21, shows trees on Blue Point Avenue, in Petito’s hometown of Blue Point, New York. Rob Welsh, the vice president of the Bayport-Blue Point Chamber of Commerce, told CBS that Blue Point was “kind of like a shattered community,” following Petito’s death. Petito was first reported missing on September 11, 10 days after Brian Laundrie returned from the couple’s cross-country road trip alone. Laundrie, a person of interest in the case, has not been seen since September 13. The FBI ruled Petito’s death a homicide, with the specific cause pending a final autopsy result.
