Canada holds parliamentary elections

Justin Trudeau's political future is in the balance – as Canadians head to the polls today. Around 27 million people are eligible to vote in the Parliamentary elections – which Prime Minister Trudeau called two years early. A CBC News poll released before the election showed Trudeau's Liberal Party with a less than one percentage point lead over Erin O'Toole's Conservatives. Jagmeet Singh may prove to be the king-maker –his left-wing New Democratic Party was polling at 20 per cent. The Liberals are currently ruling in minority. The PM is hoping to pick up at least 170 seats in the 338 seat House of Commons to allow him to rule without a coalition. The first polls opened last night with the last polls close on the West Coast at midday Australian Eastern Time. Special mail-in votes won't be tallied until late tonight – meaning it may be awhile before its known whether Justin Trudeau continues his near-six-year rule – or whether Erin O'Toole will be Canada's 24th Prime Minister.
