Heavy rainfall caused severe flooding in the Gard region of southern France on September 14, bringing extensive damage to property and vehicles, according to local authorities. Footage released by the Gard region’s fire department shows a man, identified as Fred Mercatili, who said his livelihood was destroyed within hours after the water levels in his home in Aigues-Vives reached a height of almost 1.5 meters. A car was reportedly carried away by the flooding, and further investigation is needed to assess the damage, according to the fire department. Officials said 10.6 inches (270 mm) of rain fell in Aigues-Vives. According to the fire department, a gas leak close to the highway prompted an urgent response by fire crews. In response to the flooding, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin visited the Gard area. “We will work hard to support everyone impacted by this natural disaster and call on all residents to be extremely careful in the coming days,” according to his Twitter post.
