There has been a major fracture in Australia’s diplomatic relationship with France after the unveiling of the AUKUS alliance. France has responded after the agreement ended the $90 billion submarine contract and have announced the withdrawal of its Australian and American ambassadors. This comes after France cancelled a big gala event in the United States which was planned to celebrate the French and US alliance. French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian released a statement on behalf of the government saying the decision was justified by the “exceptional gravity” of the AUKUS alliance announcement.
