The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has been grilled by lawmakers over the target of a drone strike launched in retaliation to the Kabul bombing. He conceded he did not know who was killed in the revenge attack. On the second day of the hearing, committee members questioned the Biden administration's contingency plan for the collapse of the Afghan government and the chaotic events that followed. There are reports the drone strike hit an aid worker by mistake but the government is yet to confirm. Mr Blinken also told the hearing it's estimated thousands of at-risk Afghans remain stranded after facing scrutiny over plans to rescue eligible visa holders and U-S citizens before the deadline. He pledged humanitarian aid to the Afghan people would continue through UN agencies and non-government organisations. The Biden administration is expected to elect a senior official to be responsible to ensure assistance is provided – particularly to women and girls.
