Peter Dutton labels China ‘immature’ over AUKUS criticism

Defence Minister Peter Dutton has dismissed criticism from China over Australia's nuclear submarine arrangement with the United States, calling it “immature”. Mr Dutton revealed Australia could see a greater presence of US troops in the country as part of the alliance. He did not shy away from criticising how the Indo-Pacific region had been handled, particularly on the focus of maintaining rules-based order. Mr Dutton and Secretary of State Antony Blinken did not hesitate to talk about China directly and why the AUKUS alliance was so significant. Speaking exclusively to Sky News Australia, Mr Dutton was clear about the threat China poses in the region and responded to criticism from Chinese newspaper The Global Times. “I think some of the propaganda we’ve seen from a number of spokespersons or the media outlets who speak on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party, frankly, I think they make the case for us,” he said. “I think their comments are counterproductive and immature and frankly embarrassing.”
