Former US Senator Bob Dole has died at the age of 98. A World War II veteran - Dole had almost died after being seriously wounded by a German shell in 1945. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1961 - before switching to the Senate in 1969 - serving twice as Senate majority leader. Mr Dole was Gerald Ford's running mate in the 1976 Election - and was the Republican presidential nominee in 1996 - losing to Bill Clinton. Dole revealed in February he had been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. His death was confirmed via a statement from the Elizabeth Dole Foundation.
