Utah transport officials urged drivers to take care and adhere to the state’s “traction law” as snow and ice continued to create slick, hazardous conditions in the Cottonwood Canyons, east of Salt Lake City, on Friday morning, December 10. Utah’s traction law requires all vehicles traveling through Big and Little Cottonwood canyons to be equipped with approved snow tires or traction devices when the law is in effect. Footage posted by the UDOT shows snowplow crews clearing roadways in the darkness of the early morning, and traffic moving slowly along a freshly salted road later that morning. Heavy snow showers continued through the morning but were expected to taper off in the afternoon. The Utah Avalanche Center also issued a warning that the avalanche risk on higher slopes in the Salt Lake mountains was “considerable.” Avalanches triggered by humans were “likely” and natural avalanches were “possible,” the UAC said.
