IOC holds second video call with Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai

The International Olympic Committee has held a second video call with Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai who "appeared to be safe" amid ongoing concerns about her welfare. The IOC was criticised for failing to make demands about her safety after their first call with her on November 21. No details of the conversation have been published, but in a statement the IOC said: "We have offered her wide-ranging support, will stay in regular touch with her, and have already agreed on a personal meeting in January." "We are using "quiet diplomacy" which, given the circumstances and based on the experience of governments and other organisations, is indicated to be the most promising way to proceed effectively in such humanitarian matters." The 35-year-old tennis player went missing after accusing a former Communist Party leader of sexual assault. The Women's Tennis Association yesterday announced it was suspending all tournaments in China.
