Satellite Imagery Captures Deadly Wind Storm Sweeping Across Great Plains

Deadly hurricane-force winds blew across the Great Plains region of the United States on December 15, causing at least five deaths and creating a dust storm that severely limited visibility and caused the shutdown of some highways. Powered by unseasonably warm temperatures, the weather system spawned reported tornadoes in several states, including what would be the first recorded tornado in Minnesota during December. In Kansas, authorities blocked off highways due to reduced visibility caused by blowing dust. This satellite imagery, captured by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s GOES-16 satellite, shows the dust blown across the Great Plains on Wednesday. Credit: CIRA/NOAA via Storyful
