Timelapse Captures ‘Optimal Star-Gazing Conditions’ in Northwest Kansas

Clear skies made for “optimal star-gazing conditions” over northwest Kansas late on Wednesday, December 1, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Goodland. Timelapse footage posted by NWS staff captured stars sparkling in the night’s sky, and the lights of small aircraft as they flew in and out of the neighboring Goodland Municipal Airport, the weather service wrote. The NWS said early on Thursday that it was anticipating “record or near-record high temperatures” across the region that day, with highs in the mid-upper 70s. Shortly after 10 am, the weather service tweeted that the temperature in Hill City, in north-central Kansas, had reached 74 degrees Fahrenheit, breaking its previous record of 73 F recorded in 1972.
