New York declares state of emergency

President Joe Biden to declare a state of emergency after at least 22 people including a two-year-old boy have died in catastrophic flooding across New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The tail end of Hurricane Ida triggered heavy rain and wild weather as more than 80 millimetres of rain hit in Central Park in an hour, breaking a 94 year record. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio described the flooding as brutal as lives were lost across the region and properties and cars were submerged. New York officials warn natural disasters such as flooding will be more prevalent in the future as scientists say extreme heat and rain are being made more likely and more severe by climate change.
