British farmers are ‘mounting a big campaign’ against Australian meat

National Farmers Federation President Fiona Simson says British farmers are “mounting a big campaign” about the dangers of Australian meat as the UK and Australia come to a free trade agreement. “I think they’re determined to be mounting a pretty big campaign over there in the UK which is disappointing but understandable given ... the role of the farmer’s unions in the UK .... is to stick up for their members,” she told Sky News. Ms Simson said any meat trade Australia would do with the UK would be a “niche product” in the UK market and attributed the UK’s nervousness to its recent exit from the European Union. “I think they’re very nervous, they’re coming out of a long relationship with the EU and they’re now wanting to stand on their own two feet as a country which is exciting … and they're wanting to do deals that are going benefit their population and they can focus just on what the UK wants.”
