Syrians Celebrate as President Bashar al-Assad is Re-elected in Landslide Victory

Celebrations erupted in the Syrian city of Aleppo early on May 28 after President Bashar al-Assad won a fourth term in office with 95.1% of the vote. Footage uploaded by the state-owned Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) shows large crowds gathered on the streets waving Syrian flags and holding placards of Assad. Head of parliament Hammouda Sabbagh announced the results at a news conference on Thursday, saying voter turnout was at around 78%.
