Residents Flee Goma as New Volcanic Eruption Warned

Residents were told to evacuate from 10 neighborhoods in Goma, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, on May 27, due to the threat of another volcanic eruption and repeated earthquakes. This footage, by Tom Peyre-Costa of the Norwegian Refugee Council, shows traffic jams as people leave. Peyre-Costa said the footage was filmed at the border with Rwanda. The evacuation comes in the wake of the eruption of Mount Nyiragongo on May 22, which killed at least 32 people and prompted tens of thousands of people to flee. The Red Cross in Africa said it was helping to reunite families after 300 children were separated from their parents in the wake of the eruption.
