There is no immediate end in sight to Israel’s assault on Gaza with the city efficiently remaining in lockdown 10 days after tensions with Hamas flared up. At least 223 Palestinians have been killed in airstrikes and 12 people have died in Israel. The Gaza Strip has been under an economic and military blockade by Israel and Egypt since 2007 - a measure Israel said was designed to prevent Hamas from firing rockets into civilian areas in Israel.
