Police Reclaim Looted Goods in South Africa

Law enforcement agencies in Durban worked on July 19 to reclaim property that was stolen during the ongoing unrest in which at least 200 people were killed in South Africa. Footage shared by police spokesperson Lirandzu Themba shows police and citizens working together to collect looted goods on Monday. Themba wrote on Twitter that police were working on tips from community members “on the whereabouts of stolen property,” but that several residents surrendered stolen goods to police voluntarily. Protests began after former President Jacob Zuma handed himself into authorities to serve a 15-month jail sentence, and soon spiraled into violence and wide-scale looting. The South African government said it would deploy 25,000 troops to quell the violence. Credit: Lirandzu Themba via Storyful
