Senior Afghan official pleads for special visa

A senior Afghan government official is pleading with the Australian Government for a special visa. The Australian newspaper reports the individual is facing a certain death sentence for assisting Australian soldiers during a mission in Afghanistan's south. The person cannot be identified over fears it would immediately make them a target of the Taliban. Foreign Minister Marise Payne will need to endorse the official if his application is to be successful. Hundreds of Afghans including interpreters, embassy staff and aid contractors are attempting to leave the country as the Taliban makes further gains. A former special forces commander, Heston Russell, told Sky News it could have a lasting impact on Australia's next overseas campaign.
