Four NSW shires plunged into new restrictions over fresh case

One new coronavirus case has plunged Byron Bay and three surrounding shires into fresh restrictions in a pre-emptive bid to prevent a health crisis. All venues in the Byron, Ballina, Lismore and Tweed shires have reverted to the four-square metre rule with all patrons asked to remain seated at all times. The number of people allowed to visit a household has been capped at 30 visitors. Premier Gladys Berejiklian asked that residents in the four local government areas wear face masks – and they are being made mandatory in retail settings, hospitality venues for workers, in ride shares and on public transport. She flagged while it was not mandatory it was the state government’s “very strong preference” that residents in the affected shires do not travel outside their local areas. NSW residents planning on travelling to the Byron region over the Easter holiday were also asked to reconsider their plans. “We won't be policing that but it is very strong advice," Ms Berejiklian said.
