Labor playing ‘cheap politics’ with flood crisis

Emergency Management Minister David Littleproud has accused Labor of playing “cheap politics” with the flood crisis. The opposition said the government has failed to mitigate floods despite a $4 billion emergency response fund which was set up in 2019. “To say the federal government hasn’t been out there and cut the cheque for these people is cheap politics,” Mr Littleproud told Sky News on Sunday. “This shouldn’t be about politics, it should be about the people”. Mr Littleproud said of the $200 million a year, $150 million goes towards repair from catastrophic events and those programs have to be exhausted before funds are set aside for mitigation. Speaking with Sky News host Kieran Gilbert, Mr Littleproud accused Labor of not reading the legislation. “We just say to the opposition you actually either didn’t read the legislation that you supported or you are just playing cheap politics, we should be above it," he said. Mr Littleproud also called on insurance companies to show humanity towards flood victims.
