Holgate inquiry provides ‘strong basis’ for financial sustainability of Australia Post

Nationals Senator Bridget McKenzie says the Senate inquiry into the departure of former Australia Post CEO Christine Holgate “provides a strong basis for the future financial sustainability of Australia Post”. “Particularly [for] the 2,500 licensees right across rural and regional Australia who really loved the way the former CEO Christine Holgate managed the business, included them in decision making and really did some great deals to underpin their financial sustainability going forward,” she said. Ms Holgate exited Australia Post last year after it was revealed four executives had been awarded Cartier watches with a total worth of $20,000 but she has since been cleared of misusing taxpayer funds. "I back the fact that we’ve got a Commonwealth-owned entity in Australia Post that has an obligation to the community to deliver letters," Ms McKenzie said. “One of the recommendations I was very strong on making was that shouldn’t be the only thing that Australia Post has to do in terms of fulfilling its community service obligations”. Ms McKenzie told Sky News Australia Post should also have an obligation to have a parcel service due the explosion of ecommerce which has taken place during COVID. She also said Australia Post should “build on Holgate’s legacy” where she ensured people in regional communities where the banks had left town could still get the banking done at the post office.
