Pandemic fatigue is back in a ‘very big way’

As millions of Australians struggle with strict lockdowns the country’s top mental health expert says pandemic fatigue is back in a “very big way”. National Mental Health Commission CEO Christine Morgan told Sky News she believes it is probably impacting nearly every Australian. “It’s if you like the mental health or psychological equivalent of when we feel just so physically fatigued, if we’ve really pushed ourselves,” she said. “We’ve just gone through so much over the last 18 months or so, we have more lockdowns, and I think people are just finding, ‘I don’t know that I can keep going’.” Ms Morgan said the warning signs of pandemic fatigue are different for everyone, but it is important to take action once they have been identified. “For some people it’s a real sense of withdrawal, low energy, for others it can actually be something like a really short fuse, we find ourselves snapping at people, we’re just irritable,” she said. “Any of those signs where you just know, I’m out of energy on this and I don’t know that I’ve got any more in me to give, that’s a real sign. “That’s what we’re asking people to be alert to and do something about.” If you or anyone you know needs help: Kids Helpline 1800 55 1800 Lifeline 13 11 14 Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636
