The Vatican has confirmed Pope Francis is alert and well the day after undergoing a three-hour operation which involved removing half his colon. The Pope required surgery due to a portion of his large intestine narrowing and there are reports complications arose during the surgery but the Vatican has not confirmed it. The 84-year-old is expected to stay in hospital in a special suite reserved for popes for about a week.
