Rescue Teams Search Newly Demolished Area of Surfside Condo

Day 12 of search and rescue efforts at the site of the Surfside building collapse was underway on July 5, amid severe storm warnings due to a tornado threat, associated with Tropical Storm Elsa, across southern Florida. Videos including drone footage released by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue show rescue crews searching through debris as strong winds blow dust across the site. Sunday night’s demolition of the remaining portion of the Champlain Towers South condominium was “executed exactly as planned,” Miami-Dade County mayor Daniella Cava said during a briefing on Monday morning. The demolition offered first responders access to a new part of the site to expand their scope of search, she said. Two additional victims were identified on Monday, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths to 27 while 118 people remained unaccounted for, according to local news reports.
