Farmers battling ‘one major disaster after another’

Frontier Services National Director Jannine Jackson says it’s been “one major disaster after another” for famers battling drought, fires, floods and a mouse plague. “We’ve probably had one of the biggest 12 months ever. We’re certainly slammed in terms of calls for help, for volunteers, and also for funds. “It’s been one major disaster after another. “In the last 12 months we’ve had the worst drought in Australian recorded history, the most devastating bushfire season, two major flood events and storms and we’ve even got a mouse plague. Ms Jackson said the “biggest heartbreak” for many farmers was they had a good season after the drought but a lot of their hard work was "now destroyed” by the floods. “It’s hard emotionally to keep coming back from one devastation after another,” she said. “Just to maybe highlight some of those issues, we’ve had one gorgeous farmer who we’ve been dealing with to help rebuild with fires. “He decided to move, he’s Royal Fire Service, so was helping save other people’s houses … and now is rescuing people from floodwater and his house has … been inundated by mice from the mouse plague. “So it’s not just one disaster … it’s emotionally hard to continue to try and rebuild from these things”.
