Australia has ‘very little’ leverage with China

Asia correspondent Adrian Brown says Australia has very little leverage in helping a citizen facing trial in China due to the tense relations between the two countries. Australian writer Yang Hengjun will face court on Thursday on espionage charges after being arrested in 2019. Australia is attempting to send diplomats to observe the trial but it’s likely it will be done so in secret. “It would be difficult for Australia even if relations were on an even keel right now but the fact they are so bad it makes it so hard for Australia to get what it wants which is consular access,” Mr Brown told Sky News. “If relations were better between Canberra and Beijing it’s possible diplomats would be given better access.”
