Australians facing jail time for returning from India

From today it will be illegal for Australian citizens to return from India due to the COVID crisis raging across the country – with those found not complying potentially facing up to five years imprisonment or a $66,000 fine. The rule applies to citizens who have been in India within 14 days of their intended arrival date in Australia. Education Minister Alan Tudge has backed the move, saying it is temporary and will buy time for the country’s national quarantine facility. “About 15 per cent of our Howard Springs facility now has COVID in it, an nearly all of that has been from returning Indians in recent weeks,” he said. “The medical experts are saying that really you only want a maximum cap of two per cent of people with COVID in your quarantine systems. “We’re giving those quarantine systems a breather so we can have surety that they’ll be safe and infections wont spread throughout the Australian community.” Mr Tudge also flagged people could return to Australia from India by quarantining somewhere else “in transit.”
