The rise of President Joe Biden to power in the United States has put pressure on Saudi Arabia to reach out to Iran and participate in the “regional dialogue”, according to Sky News US contributor Michael Ware. Both nations reportedly met in secret last month to begin discussions about moving toward a more peaceful relationship and this week released historic statements indicative of a desire to de-escalate tensions. Mr Ware said "why might this be happening? The simple answer is the Biden administration". “Many experts agree that Saudi Arabia may now feel that America doesn’t entirely have its back and won’t defend," he said. “Biden has stopped America selling offensive weapons to Saudi Arabia to use in its war in Yemen which is really a proxy war with Iran” “President Biden has said we are putting you, Saudi Arabia, on notice about human rights”. Mr Ware said Saudi Arabia is feeling pressured to “reach out” to Iran given it’s “fragile” relationship with the United States. “All through the Trump presidency Saudi Arabia knew that it had America writing it essentially a security blank cheque,” he said.
