Vogue Australia reaching out to reconnect with rural and regional women

Vogue Australia Editor-in-Chief Edwina McCann says the country’s fashion industry is making a pointed move to rural and regional areas as the conversation within the industry looks to sustainability and a desire to bring back local jobs. Vogue Australia’s virtual innovation forum will go regional for the first time this year – aiming to connect women with digital creators, thought leaders and entrepreneurs. “I think what really changed through COVID was all Australian fashion and lifestyle brands really had to look at their online offering and make sure it was world standard,” Ms McCann told Sky News. “The result of that coming out the other side of COVID has been that we really do have this incredible opportunity to market the Australian lifestyle through these brands. “There is, within the industry, a need and a desire to bring back manufacturing to this country, not just for reasons around sustainability but also because we have some of the best fine materials, or raw materials in the world.” Ms McCann also said reaching out to regional Australian women was like returning to the publication’s roots. “Vogue’s initial success in the 1950s when it was launched was really off the back of sheeps’ backs if you like, it was wealthy women on properties in the regions who were first subscribers to the magazine,” she said. “So, I think again Australia really has a chance to lead the world in this way and what better place for these businesses to start than in our regions where they are indeed connected directly to the original suppliers of wool. “I think we very proudly are going to be talking about products that are Australian made.”
