Writing skills decline among students

A national think tank warns urgent action is needed to turn around a nationwide decline in children's writing skills. Analysis of NAPLAN trends reveals secondary students writing skills are below the 2011 average with one in five failing to meet the national minimum standard. Boys performed the worst and were two years behind girls by year 9. The Centre for Independent Studies is calling for tougher entry requirements for university teaching courses and an annual English proficiency test for all students.
