Caldor Fire Smoke Looms Over Deserted Roads in South Lake Tahoe

The Caldor Fire in El Dorado County, California, remained active overnight, growing to 191,607 acres (about 299 square miles) by Tuesday, August 31, as evacuation orders and warnings remained in effect, fire officials said. Footage shot by Nate Ludwig on Tuesday morning shows a hazy sky clouding empty roads as he evacuated South Lake Tahoe. Cal Fire reported mop-up activity in the fire’s western flank as the fire reached 19 percent containment on Tuesday. The United States Department of Agriculture on August 22 announced a temporary closure of nine national forests through September 6. Credit: Nate Ludwig via Storyful
