There are increased calls for mental health cases to be reported in daily COVID-19 statistics as the impact of prolonged lockdowns and tough restrictions sparks fears of a 'shadow pandemic'. Last year 713 Victorians took their own lives – including 19 people under the age of 18. 909 people died from COVID-19 in the same period and more than 276 people had taken their lives in Victoria in the first half of 2021.
