Reports of Foiled Terror Attack After Car Seen Burning in Kabul

A car was seen burning in Kabul, Afghanistan, on August 30, after which the US military said they had thwarted a terror attack on Kabul airport using a missile defense system. “As many as five rockets were fired at Kabul airport. US military forces successfully employed our force protection measures to thwart that attack,” said Army Maj Gen Hank Taylor. “US forces retain the inherent right of self-defense and are authorized to meet threats with a swift and forceful response. Force protection is paramount in this phase of the operation.” This footage, filmed by activist group Rise to Peace, shows a plume of black smoke billowing from a car engulfed in flames. Visuals shared by Reuters appear to show a makeshift rocket launcher aimed out of the rear end of the car. Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack. “By the grace of God Almighty, the soldiers of the Caliphate targeted Kabul International Airport with six Katyusha rockets,” the group’s Nasher News said on its Telegram channel.
