Hurricane Ida makes landfall in US as a category four storm

Hurricane Ida has made landfall in the US state of Louisiana as a category four storm. It struck near Port Fourchon –south of New Orleans – bringing destructive winds of more than 240 kilometres an hour. Tens of thousands of people have fled their homes after mandatory evacuation orders were put in place ahead of the storm's arrival. Residents who remain against the order have been told to shelter in place. The National Hurricane Center predicts the storm surge could be as high as 4.8 metres – potentially submerging low-lying parts of the coastline. Ida made landfall on the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina which was a category three storm that inundated New Orleans – killing more than 1800 people.
