COVID case numbers ‘skyrocketing’ in the United States

Cypress College Political Science Professor Peter Mathews says the number of COVID-19 infections is “skyrocketing” in the United States, driven by the Delta variant and the amount of unvaccinated people. “It really is primarily the unvaccinated who are getting infected, as you said, 60,000 that is a huge increase from 12,000 less than a couple of weeks or a month ago,” he told Sky News. “It’s skyrocketing – the infection rates – and mostly the Delta variant is driving it. “The Delta variant and the fact that the unvaccinated refuse to get vaccinated.” However, Professor Mathews pointed out “breakthrough variants” were also affecting people who had been fully vaccinated. “In Los Angeles Country alone, 20 per cent of the infections were breakthroughs of those who had already been fully vaccinated,” he said. “So we know that the full vaccination is extremely helpful and it will protect you from going to the hospital, or getting ill or even dying in the vast majority of cases but the breakthrough variants and the results of that leave people a little bit sick, a little bit like the have a cold. “So it’s very well worth it to get vaccinated.”
