Fireworks Fly in Alberta on Canada Day Amid Calls to Cancel Holiday

Celebrations were underway on July 1, Canada Day, against a backdrop of calls to cancel the holiday following the recent discovery of multiple unmarked graves at former residential schools attended by members of the country’s indigenous communities. The government of Canada announced the holiday this year would be a time for reflection on “the violence that our institutions may have inflicted, the impact that this violence continues to have today on Indigenous peoples and racialized communities, and the journey that each of us must take toward reconciliation and living together.” Drone footage filmed by Dana Schmidt shows fireworks lighting up the sky in the city of Sylvan Lake, Alberta, on Thursday.
