ADF personnel creating ‘extra capacity’ for police and department of health

Operation COVID-19 Assist National Commander Brigadier Mick Garraway says the ADF personnel deployed in the Sydney hotspots are creating “extra capacity” for the police and department of health “to do what they need to do”. “So far the reports from people who we have been interacting with are positive,” he told Sky News Australia. “Over the coming days the task will develop. We’ll be doing things like assisting to establish testing sites and vaccination hubs. “We’ll almost certainly put a team back in with the department of health to assist with contact tracing which was a job we did last year for about three months quite successfully. “The easiest way to think about this is we’ll be providing supporting functions that just create extra capacity for the police, the department of health and other services to do what they need to do.” Brigadier Garraway said there were no plans for ADF personnel to help police crack down on compliance. “That is not our role, we’re not a police force, we’re not enforcing compliance,” he said.
