Lockdowns impacting student progress

The impact of extended school closures have been revealed as preliminary results were released for the 2021 NAPLAN tests. Students suffered the most in the nation's most locked-down state - as Victoria lagged behind after spending almost 150 days learning from home. Melburnians trailed in overall progress while year 9 students in New South Wales recorded their worst performance for reading since the tests began. It has been revealed one in 10 pupils did not reach the national minimum standard - a drop of 4.7 percent - after schools across Greater Sydney were closed at the start of term three. On a national scale the closures did not have a significant impact - with average scores largely unchanged from 2019 - and slight improvements for year 3 and 5 reading and year 7 writing.
