US Secretary of Defence ‘looking for allies’ in Southeast Asia

Political analyst Joe Siracusa says the US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin has travelled to Southeast Asia “looking for allies” as he tries to gather support for his anti-China position. “He is looking for allies and what he’s trying to tell people in this region – as he tries to line up support for the anti-Chinese position he wants to take – he’s saying to them a very interesting thing," he told Sky News Australia. “He’s saying you don’t have to choose between Beijing and Washington, you just have to look in front of you and see what the problem is. “He says we need better partnerships; we want integrated detergents, which is really a fancy Washington way of saying we want bases for F-35s, we want your cooperation, we want deep water ports, we want air forces bases. This is what he wants for the Philippines. “And he’s asked the Vietnamese to come on board. Of course, the Vietnamese are too smart to come on board entirely, they don’t really trust the United States. “One of the big problems here has been Southeast Asia isn’t quite sure if America is back.”
