Almost half of the Australian population in lockdown

Almost half of Australia is back in lockdown as multiple COVID outbreaks grow across the country. Queensland has become the latest state to impose stay at home orders on 4 million residents in the South East, Townsville, Palm Island and Magnetic Island until Friday. The move follows WA's announcement as the Perth and Peel regions go into day two of their four-day lockdown. Nearly 6 million people in Sydney and its surrounding regions are in the midst of a two week lockdown after the Delta strain led to 149 cases. Darwin and Palmerstone's measures have been extended until Friday after 10 cases were linked to a gold mine cluster. The states and territories have shifted responsibility for the crisis to the Federal Government saying they will continue to impose closures and shut borders until the majority of the population is vaccinated.
