An extreme heatwave has hit parts of the north-western United States and Canada, breaking all time temperature records. The US National Weather Service has issued excessive heat warning across several states unprepared for such hot weather conditions. Some cities have opened cooling centres in air-conditioned buildings where residents can escape the heat. California saw its hottest temperatures since the 1960s with places reaching 42 degrees Celsius and it is expected to get hotter.
