The fifth Intergenerational Report set to be handed down by Treasurer Josh Frydenberg today forecasts deficits for the next 40 years and a dramatic fall in Australia’s fertility rate. The report forecasts what Australia will look like over the next four decades and is released every five years. For the first time in the report’s history there has been a downgrade to the population forecast - with the population predicted to reach 38.8 million by 2061. The figure is millions fewer than had been predicted five years ago and is due to the lower than expected fertility rate and the decrease in the number of migrants as a result of the international border closure.
