Millions of residents wake up to first day of Greater Sydney lockdown

Millions of people in Greater Sydney, the Blue Mountains and the Central Coast are waking up to their first full day of lockdown. Residents are only allowed to leave home to shop for essential items, exercise, medical care or for compassionate reasons until July 9. The lockdown as imposed because health authorities believe the Delta variant of the virus is spreading at a rate which is too fast to contain - with more than 80 cases in the growing outbreak. Economists have estimated the lockdown will cost the New South Wales economy $300 million a week.
