Concern in NSW as outbreak prompts national emergency

New South Wales authorities have issued their strongest warning yet the state could be living under tough lockdown measures for a number of weeks to come after a national emergency was declared. After one month in lockdown, the state recorded 136 new cases - a record high for the third consecutive day - with at least 70 people having been active in the community for all or part of their infectious period. Premier Gladys Berejiklian has called for an urgent refocus of Australia's vaccination strategy to allow vaccines to be prioritised for people in southwest Sydney. From today residents in the Cumberland and Blacktown local government areas will be subject to stricter lockdown measures. Residents aged 40 and older are being advised they should do their duty and take up the AstraZeneca vaccine.
