Army, navy and air force personnel have hit the ground in Sydney's hotspots - boosting the city’s defence in the fight against the Delta variant. Despite fears they'd be used to help police with a hard compliance crackdown - their first tasks have been welfare checks and food drops. ADF 2nd Division Deputy Commander Mick Garraway said, "I want to say right up front that we're not a law enforcement agency and that's not what we'll be doing". The new arrivals more than double the number of military personnel deployed in New South Wales to fight the COVID outbreak, with more than 200 already working in hotel quarantine and at Sydney airport.
