Afghan Journalists and Families Arrive in Mexico City

Over 100 Afghan journalists and family members arrived in Mexico City on August 25, where they were welcomed by Mexico’s foreign minister. The New York Times reported on Wednesday that the flight had transported Afghans who worked with the paper, along with relatives. According to the Times, a deal that ultimately allowed 24 families safe passage via Qatar was brokered after the paper reached out directly to Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard. Ebrard, who shared this footage on his Twitter account, welcomed the families at Mexico City’s international airport early on Wednesday. In a statement, the country’s Secretary of Foreign Relations said that the Afghans had been granted immigrations status for 180 days. Ebrard said 124 people in total, including minors, arrived on the flight. Credit: Marcelo Ebrard via Storyful
