G7 leaders have failed to persuade US President Joe Biden to extend the deadline for troops to withdraw from Afghanistan. Mr Biden is set to stick to the August 31 deadline for the evacuation of officials and Afghan allies. There are fears the Taliban could significantly change their behaviour on the ground if the president were to announce an extension, but it seems clear more time is needed to carry out the evacuation efforts. It is believed Mr Biden will only announce a delay in the departure of US troops if he can guarantee the continued cooperation of the Taliban.
