A surge in COVID-19 cases should not impact on Australia's road map out of the pandemic according to the nation’s chief medical officer. Professor Paul Kelly said advice provided to him from the Doherty Institute shows high case numbers in New South Wales and rising infections in Victoria should not derail the plan to end lockdowns, once 80 per cent vaccination targets are reached. Under the Doherty Institute road map - agreed upon by National Cabinet - lockdowns will be less likely and restrictions eased for vaccinated Australians once coverage reaches 70 per cent. There will be only 'highly targeted' lockdowns once the nation reaches 80 per cent vaccination coverage. Queensland has joined Western Australia in threatening to maintain its hard borders even when the nation's vaccine targets are met.
