Federal bushfire recovery fund criticised by East Gippsland leaders

Member for Gippsland Darren Chester has criticised Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s bushfire recovery plan and its logic. His region which was ravaged in the 2020 Black Summer received just $4.5 million dollars of funding out of the $276 million-dollar bushfire recovery program. More than half of East Gippsland was ravaged by the fires with 1.1 million hectares burnt, 410 homes destroyed, and three lives lost. East Gippsland leaders have called on the prime minister to review the funding allocated to the region and asked to receive funding which is proportionate to the amount of damage which was sustained. Mr Chester said, “I don’t think East Gippsland’s getting a fair share under the allocation that’s been announced”.
